King of Hearts

I’ll rest my head on your window
Rest my feet on your dash
Whip me away to the pelican state and don’t ever make me come back
My daddy’s lady makes him crazy
My mama’s man don’t treat her good
We can honeymoon on every day in every room just the way they never could
We can run like we’re wanted
We can hide like city stars
My deck was drawing spades til the day you came and played, now I’m running with the king of hearts
I’ll hitch my star to your wagon
I’ll hitch my car to your truck
We can grow the food we eat and dance and drink our whiskey neat and never waste our sweat on little stuff
When the days feel like disasters
Skulls are thick and patience thin
We’ll put our feelings into words and sing em like the window birds and love each other in the shape we’re in

Desert

The west coast is a post card
Sea lions line up like ants on a log
And the sun melts in the sea like an epilogue
The northwest keeps you present
Conifers bend their elbows in the sky
And the lakes shimmer like sapphires in July
But our love’s in the desert
Our love is in the desert darlin
Endless sky and sand
No exit signs, just the blue and tan
The east coast stays in motion
Seasons change like there just might be a God
And the crickets bark at night like hungry dogs
And the South has its treasures
Crocodiles creep in green mangroves
The grass grows high and the rain clouds hang down low
But our love’s in the desert
Our love is in the desert darlin
Never rains or snows
No apple trees, no wind to blow

Loose Sand

I can't feel my feet on the floor
I could for a while but I can't anymore
You couldn't tell by lookin'
I hover where I stand
I can't feel my body at all
I roam like a ghost in a creaky hall
I go with the with til it lets me fall
I'm dancing with loose sand
Is that what I thought I needed you for?
When I was banging on your door
Became the women you took me for
When I was banging on your door
I can't feel my tongue in my mouth
It chops up words and coughs them out
I say the bravest things
When I'm the most afraid
But if you kick me when I'm down
I can tell the sky from the underground
In all your wrong's my right I found
It's cool like summer rain

I stayed up all night again with you
Can't fall asleep unless you want me to
But when the day breaks like a fever dream, I'm tired
And hungover you linger in my clothes like smoke from a fire
Cause I stayed up all night again with you
There's nothing special about your white bedroom
When the day breaks like a fever dream, it does
I want to go back to where it was
In folding chairs, wrapped in sheets
We watch the freeway from your concrete balcony
In the pink pollution sky
Of central Jersey we watch the freeway fly
Tomorrow's just the price I'll pay
I doubt I would've done much anyway
When the night falls like an eyelash on your cheek
And there's no dogs to feed or promises to keep
I'll stay up all night again it seems
I like your bedroom more than my best dreams
When the day breaks like a criminal I know
It'll take all my strength to go
With a sweep of your hand
You clear a coffee table stage for us to dance
You play The Band and I play the blues
And they sing with saxophones and I'm all over you
I stayed up all night again with you
Can't fall asleep unless you want me to
When the day breaks like a fever dream, I'm tired
You linger in my clothes like a fire
